Product Description
I’ve reviewed a couple of Bear mattresses previously, and I’ve come to realize something over time. Bear mattresses are designed to fit the requirements of athletes or those who have an active lifestyle. The company also crafts mattresses in varied designs including foam or hybrid models. Starting with its flagship product, Bear Original, an all-foam mattress, the brand engineered hybrid models along the way.
Models like Bear Elite Hybrid, Pro Hybrid, and Bear Star Hybrid are a few such hybrid models, on which I have provided comprehensive reviews. All these hybrid models pair foam layers with coils for support.
This time I have come up with something new – a latex hybrid mattress. The Bear Natural mattress is the company’s first hybrid model that is crafted with natural materials. It has a medium-firm feel that incorporates natural materials and is sufficiently thick for comfort and added durability. It’s 13 inches tall and includes natural latex. Understandably this gives it the highest price tag among all Bear mattresses.
I’ll mention a few unique features to begin with. It has GOTS Certified organic cotton quilting, a 100% natural Talalay Latex comfort layer, a Zoned coil system, Reinforced edge coils, a Shock-absorbing base layer, and several Eco-Friendly Certifications.
Now, I’ll be discussing all these technicalities in detail below.
I’ve designed this mattress review in a Q&A format so that you get all your questions answered.
Q1. What is unique about Bear Natural Mattress? Does it provide superior cooling, comfort, back support, and pressure relief?
I’ll break down each of these features below in this mattress review. As you read you’ll get an idea of how the materials have been selected for enhancing each feature. Let’s continue.
Cooling
- Breathable Organic Cotton Cover
Bear Natural has GOTS certified organic cotton cover. It is this material that enhances airflow, helping to keep the mattress surface cool and comfortable throughout the night.
- Talalay Latex Layer
Talalay latex is inherently breathable too. It allows air to circulate through the mattress. This helps to dissipate your built-up body heat and maintain a neutral temperature. This is particularly useful for hot sleepers.
- Zoned Coil System
Its individually encased coils facilitate airflow through the core of this mattress. This adds to regulating temperature even more.
Comfort
- Natural Latex Comfort Layer
Natural’s Talalay latex provides a responsive and buoyant feel. How does this make you feel? It creates a medium-firm comfort level that suits a wide range of sleep positions and body types. This layer adapts to your body’s contours, providing personalized comfort.
- Responsive Comfort Layer
The comfort layer adds to the overall comfort by reducing motion transfer and offering additional airflow and pressure relief. Finally, this makes it easier to move and shift positions (reposition) during the night.
Back Support
- Lumbar Zoned Coils
This mattress features gauged coils placed specifically targeting your lumbar region. It helps to provide targeted support and alignment for your spine. Thus, you get to maintain good posture and it helps to prevent discomfort in your lower back.
- Individually Encased Coils
Its coil system is designed to distribute weight evenly. This prevents excessive sinking and ensures that your spine remains in a natural alignment.
This is beneficial for back sleepers and if you experience recurrent back pain.
Pressure Relief
- Talalay Latex and Polyfoam Layers
Bear Natural has a combination of Talalay latex and polyfoam layers. This provides a decent amount of pressure relief by contouring your body’s natural curves. It alleviates pressure points, particularly around your hips and shoulders.
- Zoned Support System
Its zoned coil system provides targeted pressure relief in key areas, like your pressure zones. After a long workout, you receive the right amount of support where you need it most. It relaxes your muscles, supports your pressure points, and reduces any likelihood of developing pressure sores in your body.
Bear Natural uses eco-friendly materials, a robust coil system, and displays comfort features. This helps in providing cooling, comfort, back support, and pressure relief to your body. Let’s learn further on whether it can be a decent choice for restorative night’s sleep.
Q2. How firm is Bear Natural Mattress?
Bear Natural Mattress has a medium-firm feel, which is rated at around 6 (medium-firm) on a firmness scale of 1 to 10.
This firmness level strikes a balance between support and comfort, making it suitable for a wide range of sleepers and sleeping positions.
Q3. How thick is Bear Natural Mattress?
Bear Natural Mattress is 13 inches thick, providing ample depth for its multiple layers of comfort and support.
This thickness allows for a well-balanced combination of the natural Talalay latex, zoned coil system, and supportive base layer, ensuring a comfortable and supportive sleep experience.
Its 13-inch profile also contributes to the durability and overall performance of the mattress.
Q4. Is Bear Natural Mattress safe?
Yes, I find this Bear Natural Mattress quite fit. It is designed with safety and health in mind. I’ll explain. It is made from GOTS certified organic cotton and 100% natural Talalay latex, ensuring non-toxic and sustainable materials. The mattress is also free from harmful chemicals and fiberglass, featuring EcoFlex™ fiberglass-free materials and construction.
Additionally, it holds several safety and eco-friendly certifications, including.
- GREENGUARD Gold Certified: Ensures low chemical emissions and contributes to healthier indoor air quality.

In my opinion Bear Natural is a safe and healthy choice for sleepers.

Firmness
In this section of the mattress review, I’m about to breakdown how Bear Natural Mattress’s firmness can benefit different types of sleeping styles.
1. Side Sleepers
- Under 130 lbs: The Natural mattress provides a firmness level of 6. This means that it offers moderate contouring and pressure relief around the shoulders and hips. Thus, you get proper spinal alignment without the mattress feeling too firm.
- 130-230 lbs: Side sleepers in this weight range will find the mattress supportive and comfortable. Its Talalay latex layer adds buoyant cradling, relieving pressure points without restricting movement.
- Above 230 lbs: Heavier side sleepers will also benefit from the medium-firm feel, providing adequate support and pressure relief while keeping their spine aligned.
2. Back Sleepers
- Under 130 lbs: Bear Natural Mattress is decent for back sleepers in this weight range. The combination of cotton quilting, Talalay latex, and polyfoam provides cushioning and contouring, supporting your lumbar region and maintaining good posture.
- 130-230 lbs: If you are an average weight back sleeper, you will find this mattress supportive. You’ll see that there’s no excessive sinking of the hips and the mattress will help you maintain a good spinal alignment.
- Above 230 lbs: Heavier back sleepers may find the mattress slightly less firm but still offering adequate support for your spine. If you are one of those with more weight around their hips I’d suggest you to opt for a firmer mattress for robust support.
3. Stomach Sleepers
- Under 130 lbs: Stomach sleepers will appreciate its balanced medium-firm feel. I find that it supports their posture well and prevents their lower back from bending excessively.
- 130-230 lbs: The mattress has a firmness rating of 6 which is decent for this weight range. Some stomach sleepers may find their lower back bending slightly, but the mattress still offers reasonable support.
- Above 230 lbs: If you are on the heavier side, you might experience more sinkage. Thus, I feel that it might not be ideal for supporting your lower back.
Material & Construction
Q1. What are the unique technology, design, and materials used in the construction of Bear Natural Mattress?
I’ve mentioned this earlier that Bear incorporates several unique technologies, designs, and materials to increase a sleeper’s comfort, and support. It’s also a sustainable and durable choice. I’ll detail on its layers of construction now.
- GOTS Certified Organic Cotton: Its cover is made from Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton, providing a soft, breathable, and eco-friendly surface.
- Natural Talalay Latex: Its 100% natural, non-toxic, and sustainably sourced latex layer offers unique cushioning with a medium-firm feel. It provides buoyant cradling, relaxes muscles, and relieves tension.
- Responsive Comfort Layer: This layer adapts to all body types and sleep positions, reducing motion transfer while offering additional airflow and pressure relief.
- Individually Encased Zoned Coils: Bear Natural mattress features individually encased coils that provide well-distributed support. Higher-gauged coils are strategically placed in the center for your lumbar support. This takes care of pressure relief, motion isolation, and breathability.
- Reinforced Edge Coils: Extra strong edge coils reinforce the mattress perimeter. It enhances edge support and prevents saggy sides.
- Shock Absorbing Base Layer: The DuraDense base layer provides foundational support and durability to the entire mattress.
- EcoFlex™ Fiberglass-Free Materials: This mattress is free from fiberglass. How? It uses EcoFlex™ materials to ensure safety and non-toxicity.

Repositioning
Q1. How would you rate Bear Natural Mattress from a repositioning & responsiveness perspective?
Repositioning
Bear Natural Mattress offers a fair amount of repositioning with its medium-firm feel. This makes it easy for you to change positions throughout the night. Its natural Talalay latex layer provides a buoyant and responsive surface that quickly adjusts to movements. This prevents you from feeling “stuck” in the mattress, which is often common with memory foam mattresses.
Responsiveness
Bear Natural Mattress has a combination of natural latex and individually encased zoned coils to create a responsive sleep surface. This latex layer quickly rebounds to its original shape after pressure is applied and removed, providing immediate support and comfort.
The zoned coils add to this by offering targeted support and adapting to different body contours, ensuring that the mattress responds well to various body types and sleeping positions. This responsiveness is particularly beneficial for active sleepers and those with mobility issues. I would rate the responsiveness of the Bear Natural Mattress as fairly decent, as it effectively accommodates and reacts to every movement you make.
Comfort, Back Support, Pressure Relief
Q2. How would you rate Bear Natural Mattress for providing comfort and pressure relief to sleepers?
Let’s discuss its pressure relief abilities comprehensively.
Comfort
Bear Natural Mattress offers comfort, primarily due to its well-thought-out combination of materials. Its GOTS-certified organic cotton cover provides a soft and breathable surface, enhancing the overall comfort from the first touch.
The natural Talalay latex comfort layer adds to this by offering a balanced, medium-firm feel that accommodates various sleeping positions. This latex layer delivers a buoyant yet supportive sensation, which helps in maintaining comfort throughout the night.
Pressure Relief
Bear Natural Mattress does provide good pressure relief, due to its design. The natural Talalay latex layer gently cradles your body, reducing pressure points and relieving tension in key areas such as your shoulders, hips, and lower back.
Its individually encased zoned coils further enhance this by providing targeted support where it’s needed most. These coils are designed to align with the body’s natural contours, ensuring optimal spinal alignment and minimizing pressure buildup.
I recommend this mattress’s design as particularly beneficial for side and back sleepers. Why? Because it helps maintain a comfortable posture and reduces discomfort.
Cooling & Temperature Control
Q3. How would you rate the cooling and overall temperature control characteristics of the Bear Natural Mattress?
- Cooling
Bear Natural Mattress performs well in terms of cooling
This is due to its thoughtfully chosen materials and design. Its GOTS-certified organic cotton cover is highly breathable, allowing for sufficient air circulation on the mattress surface. This helps to dissipate heat well, ensuring that you get a cool and comfortable sleep environment.
Additionally, its natural Talalay latex layer is inherently more breathable than other foam types, such as memory foam. This allows for increased airflow through the mattress, contributing to its ability to stay cool throughout the night. Overall, I would rate the cooling capabilities of Bear Natural Mattress as good, making it a decent option if you sleep warm.
- Temperature Control
In terms of overall temperature control, I find that Bear Natural Mattress’s breathable cotton cover and natural latex layer help regulate temperature. Furthermore, the individually encased zoned coils promote airflow within the mattress, aiding in the dispersal of body heat.
This prevents heat buildup and thus you experience a neutral sleep temperature.
The mattress’s ability to adapt to different body types and sleeping positions also means that it manages heat retention well.
Motion Isolation and Sharing a Bed
Q4. Does Bear Natural Mattress provide reasonable motion isolation when sharing a bed with others?
Bear Natural Mattress provides reasonable motion isolation, which is particularly beneficial for couples or anyone sharing a bed. The combination of natural Talalay latex and individually encased zoned coils helps to minimize motion transfer across the mattress surface. While latex has a naturally springy and responsive feel, which can allow some motion to spread, the polyfoam layer beneath it helps to dampen these movements.
Additionally, the pocketed coil system works to isolate motion further by containing movements to specific areas, preventing significant disturbance to the other sleeper.
Although Bear Natural Mattress might not offer the same level of motion isolation as an all-foam mattress, it performs well compared to other hybrid models.
Most sleepers will find that typical movements, such as a partner getting in and out of bed or shifting positions, are adequately absorbed by the mattress. However, light sleepers who are particularly sensitive to motion might notice some movement.
Edge Support
Q5. How would you rate the edge support of Bear Natural Mattress?
Bear Natural Mattress offers commendable edge support, which is a crucial feature if you like to use the full surface of their bed. You can comfortably sit on the edges, or share the mattress with a partner. Bear Natural incorporates reinforced edge coils that strengthen the perimeter and prevent it from sagging. This design ensures that the mattress maintains its shape and provides consistent support even when you lie or sit close to the edges.
Recommendation based on sleeping style
Side Sleepers
I find that Bear Natural Mattress is a decent choice for side sleepers.
Its medium-firm feel, combined with natural Talalay latex comfort layer provide a balance of softness and support.
The latex layer offers gentle contouring to cushion your pressure points such as the shoulders and hips, which are crucial areas if you are a side sleeper.
Additionally, its individually encased zoned coils ensure that the mattress adapts to the body’s curves, promoting proper spinal alignment and reducing discomfort.
Most side sleepers, particularly those who weigh between 130-230 pounds, will find this mattress comfortable and supportive.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers will appreciate Bear Natural Mattress for support and contouring.
Its medium-firm feel helps to maintain the natural curve of your spine, providing the necessary lumbar support to keep the back properly aligned.
The combination of the latex comfort layer and the zoned coil system ensures that the mattress offers balanced support, preventing the hips from sinking too deeply and misaligning the spine.
This makes the Bear Natural Mattress a solid choice for back sleepers of various body types, particularly those under 230 pounds, who will find it supportive and comfortable.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers generally need a firmer surface to keep their hips elevated and maintain spinal alignment.
Bear Natural Mattress, with its medium-firm feel, provides adequate support for stomach sleepers, especially those under 130 pounds.
Its natural Talalay latex layer offers a responsive and supportive surface, while the reinforced edge coils and zoned support system help keep the body well-aligned.
However, heavier stomach sleepers (above 130 pounds) might find the mattress slightly less firm than ideal, which could lead to some discomfort over time. For these sleepers, a slightly firmer mattress might be a better option.
